Frequently asked questions
No, there are many approaches to address your concerns (see the HOW I WORK section).
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy that helps people heal from trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences. When something overwhelming happens, the nervous system can get “stuck,” and the memory may continue to feel present in the body and emotions. EMDR uses gentle, guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help the brain naturally process and release these experiences. Many people find that memories become less triggering, and they feel calmer, more grounded, and more like themselves again.
No, I will spend time with you to help with grounding and safety skills BEFORE we decide to start EMDR.I will also ensure that you leave your session feeling safe and grounded. EMDR does not ask you to relive or share all the details and you are always in control.
Yes, with your verbal and/or written consent, I often ask a member(s) of your support system to join a few sessions, if necessary. If you are a teen, I will be meeting with your parent/caregiver for check-ins, if appropriate.
Yes, I am trained to write letters of support for gender affirming health care. There are more details related to this so please ask me.
